Nice preso. The questions afterwards were interesting.

Slightly flawed though by not being able to see all of the slides on the video; can you put that up somewhere? I’m fairly sure a couple of the jokes went missing...

This blog post on the rather great You Are Not So Smart seems like a slightly different angle on the “shame cycle” thing and basically why something like Fitocracy should work better than traditional goal setting.

All very good, and I’m glad it’s working so well for you.

I’ve found it much less motivating. It doesn’t recognise far too many of my preferred forms of exercise (housework and gardening, particularly), and it’s got no ‘pregnancy’ setting.

The way it keeps asking my current weight really annoys me. I neither know nor care.

To me, it feels like something designed for people who use a few widely recognised forms of exercise. They’ve made an effort to ‘branch out’, but their overall approach really doesn’t fit my activities.

I’ll probably keep using it, because it’s handy to have the tracking I’m getting, and it might, I hope, improve, but for now, I’m not really as enthusiastic as I could have been.

Glenn Mulcaire was employed on a contract for £104,000 a year by NOTW (http://www.pressgazette.co.uk/story.asp?storycode=36697).

The out of court settlements with Gordon Taylor and Max Clifford, which prevented evidence being presented in court, are thought to have cost £2m (http://www.pressgazette.co.uk/story.asp?storycode=45157).

Yeah, too common an experience I think, and as a technical writer I wince when I hear about inadequate/absent documentation.

I think purchasing decisions would be significantly different if people had information about support and so forth when they make the initial decision. If Dick Smith cared about the whole value of what they sell, they could have internet access which made it easy to check the websites and reviews of the things they have in store. Preferably at the end of each isle. There are a few things I’ve wrestled with and would not have bought if I’d known how inadequate the support was. Perhaps I should factor this function into the total benefit provided by a proper internet-capable phone.

One of the things about Trade Me which I really like is the reviews and ratings. It makes it easier for a vendor’s or product’s reputation to be assessed at the point where it makes the most difference to the purchase decision. I hope (and kind of expect) that that sort of facility will increase over time.

I do wonder how many things Ada is not going to know simply because they happen out of her sight.

This is one reason I try to make and mend more things now we have her -- I like understanding my world, and so much of hers looks like magic rather than technology at first glance.

It’s not a new problem. One of my favourite children’s books has a character, a city kid, who is convinced that ‘milk grows in bottles’. The book is about sixty or seventy years old, I think.
