No, I don’t think it’s the brown/white distinction; it’s more the post 9/11 media demands that security be “guaranteed” (because risk management is a foreign and scary concept, and woe betide you if you talk about probabilities). I’ve been yelling at the car radio as I listen to interviews on the National Programme (FFS!) where the interviewee is asked if they can “100% guarantee” the security of the “team” (in this case, I think it might have been something about the soccer world cup). No, of course they can’t “100% guarantee” the security of the team; the interviewer doesn’t even know what the threat is, so why ask the question? And I heard some interview about the IPL match where apparently the foreign players were worried about the threat of subsequent bomb blasts, and the local players were more worried about the much more real probability of the crowd rioting if they called the match off. |
