The quote of the conference is still “Twitter: Release early, release often—for thinking.”
L3wt soon, but first:
Great Firewall of ChinaaAustralia.
Geoff Waugh is here to discuss the Great Firewall of Australia. This legislation is to be released in February—next month.
- It won’t protect children.
- We will all pay, in money and loss of freedom. And if Australia goes down this path, other English-speaking nations will feel free to continue.
- It’s easy to expand. Too easy.
What can you do?
- Write to your MP. Ask difficult, polite questions. There’s an article in Crikey on how to do this.
- Sign the EFA’s Senate petition.
- “The Great Australian Internet Blackout”—next week. Blackout your sites next week.
- Focus on Education. Positive engagement. Ranting on the street in manga costumes tends to work less well.
- The Blackout is a nice gimmick that the media latch onto.
- It can work—look at S92A in New Zealand.
Nat sez:
- Kiwis may not know that the DIA has already run a pilot, and is planning to roll it out Soon(tm).
- InternetNZ is fighting this, as is Tech Liberty.
- It’s neither technically a good idea, nor desirable generally.
