The other problem with the idea that you shouldn’t like rugby because you’re too civilised or intelligent is that it sounds suspiciously like how I shouldn’t like power tools because I’m fond of sewing or how I shouldn’t like violent sports because I’m seriously girly. We like what we like. If it doesn’t injure people, we shouldn’t have to limit our likes and dislikes so that we will make good little stereotypes.

The thing that baffles me is that there are people who talk about their emotional maturity like they are proud of it. WTF?

I meant immaturity, of course. Man I am on a losing streak with internet communication this week...

Oh please. I keep my distaste for the rugby cult (as opposed to the game) in check 99% of the time, but if there is ever an occasion to let it run free, surely it would be now. And I’m afraid this is as grown-up as I’m ever likely to be. Hmm. I think my pigeon-hole doesn’t include a rule about rugby. So I get to make a reasonably free choice about it. But then again, my high school wasn’t really a rugby high school (it had 6 soccer teams and no rugby (league or union) teams one year). I remember vaguely how the non-rugby people in Aro Valley used to react to the rugby society in the early 80’s. I think back then the battle lines were, well, battle lines. These days I think it is well worth attempting to blur the lines as much as possible. This is why I wax lyrical about the Scotland - Fiji game I saw once and how it looked like beautiful animated chess due to the complimentary colours of the players and their uniforms. It messes multiple assumptions. The author does not allow comments to this entry
